Prosthodontics (Dental Prostheses)

A dental prosthesis is an artificial tooth or set of teeth made to replace missing or aesthetically compromised teeth. The purpose of prosthodontic applications is to create artificial teeth that are harmonious with the patient’s facial structure, provide the most natural appearance possible, and restore chewing and speech functions.

Prostheses can be classified into two main categories:

  • Fixed Prostheses: Crowns and bridges that are cemented onto existing teeth and cannot be removed by the patient.

  • Removable Prostheses: Appliances that can be inserted and removed by the patient at will.

Types of Crowns

Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal (PFM) Crowns

In this type, a metal alloy substructure is placed beneath the porcelain. These alloys, usually cobalt-chromium or nickel-chromium, are biocompatible and durable enough to withstand chewing forces.

Zirconium-Supported Porcelain Crowns

Instead of metal, a white zirconium substructure is used. Zirconium crowns provide an appearance very close to natural teeth. Since the substructure is white, there is no risk of a dark line forming along the gum line. Zirconium is 100% biocompatible and does not cause allergic reactions.

All-Ceramic Crowns

Made entirely of reinforced porcelain without any metal or other substructure material. Although more costly compared to other porcelain crowns, they offer the most natural and aesthetic appearance.

Laminate Veneers (Porcelain Veneers)

Also known as “leaf porcelain”, laminate veneers are used for aesthetic correction of anterior (front) teeth. They are thin, semi-translucent porcelain shells bonded to the front surfaces of the teeth.

  • Only a very thin layer of enamel is removed from the tooth surface, causing minimal damage.

  • The veneer is bonded onto the existing tooth with excellent precision.

  • Being very thin and metal-free, they provide highly aesthetic and natural results.
