Dental Implants

In its simplest definition, a dental implant is an artificial tooth root placed into the jawbone to replace teeth lost for various reasons. Implants restore the function and aesthetics of missing teeth. They are screw-shaped metal structures made of pure titanium or titanium alloys, surgically placed into the jawbone. Implants can be applied to replace a single missing tooth, multiple teeth, or even to support dentures in completely edentulous (toothless) mouths.

Stages and Treatment Duration of Implants

The implant procedure consists of two stages: surgery and prosthetic restoration. Therefore, close cooperation between the oral and maxillofacial surgeon and the prosthodontist is essential.

  1. Surgical Stage: The implant fixture is placed into the jawbone through a surgical procedure. On the same day, the patient leaves with a temporary tooth, so there is no period without teeth.

  2. Healing Period: A waiting period of about 2–6 weeks is required, during which osseointegration (bone growth around the implant) occurs.

  3. Prosthetic Stage: The prosthetic restoration (the crown, bridge, or denture) is completed in approximately one week.

  4. Final Adjustments: With final refinements, the treatment is completed.

Advantages of Dental Implants

  • Strong, comfortable, and reliable

  • Prostheses on implants function like natural teeth and provide the most natural appearance

  • No need to touch or reduce healthy neighboring teeth

  • Longer lifespan compared to other treatment alternatives

  • Offers superior speech and chewing function compared to traditional crowns and dentures

  • Prevents or reduces jawbone resorption

  • Provides a natural appearance that harmonizes with the face

Maintenance of Implants

Implants do not require special maintenance. Regular oral and dental care procedures are sufficient. However, if proper hygiene is not maintained, implants can fail just like natural teeth. The first warning signs are gum redness, swelling, bleeding, and itching. If neglected, bone loss occurs and the implant loses its function.
