Composite (Aesthetic) Fillings

Composite (Aesthetic) Fillings

What Are Aesthetic Fillings?

Aesthetic fillings are made of composite resin material. They are moldable, hardened with halogen light, and chemically bonded to the tooth surface.

Why Are Aesthetic Fillings Needed?

Modern dentistry aims to ensure that treatments are both visually and functionally satisfying. The goal of aesthetic fillings is to replicate the natural form, shape, and color of the tooth so that the restoration is indistinguishable from the patient’s natural teeth.

Are Aesthetic Fillings Durable?

Although metal (amalgam) fillings were once believed to be more durable, advances in dental materials have made composites stronger, longer-lasting, healthier, and more esthetically pleasing. Today, composite fillings can withstand daily chewing forces while providing superior cosmetic results.

Do Aesthetic Fillings Have a Lifespan?

With proper oral hygiene, aesthetic fillings maintain their integrity without deformation, leakage, or gaps. During routine 6–12 month dental check-ups, the fillings can be polished and maintained to ensure a longer lifespan. Their longevity is directly related to the patient’s oral care habits.

Do Aesthetic Fillings Need to Be Replaced Over Time?

No. As long as oral hygiene is maintained and there is no new decay in the tooth, aesthetic fillings do not need replacement.

Do Aesthetic Fillings Protect Teeth?

Yes. Since composite resin has a hardness close to that of natural teeth and chemically bonds to the enamel, it provides added protection against fractures and structural weaknesses.

Can I Replace My Old Metal (Amalgam) Fillings With Aesthetic Fillings?

Yes. Old amalgam fillings can be safely replaced with aesthetic composite fillings in a single session.

Should I Choose an Aesthetic Filling or a Porcelain Crown?

Our priority is to preserve as much of the natural tooth structure as possible. If a tooth is weakened by extensive decay or fractures, the dentist will first assess whether it can be adequately restored with an aesthetic filling. Thanks to advancements in composite technology, many cases that previously required porcelain crowns can now be successfully treated with long-lasting composite fillings.
